Credit Counseling is a precondition to filing bankruptcy. There were some very significant changes to the law due to the Republican control of Congress. They have made bankruptcy the last step. Also, you may not be eligible for Chapter 7 and may have to go Chapter 13. You should see a bankruptcy attorney about these issues because every situation is different and your situation may fall within an exception to the general rules. I am not a bankruptcy attorney, and can't really give you advice on the process. Here in Jefferson City there are a number of very good bankruptcy lawyers who can assist you.
