Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri

Collecting a personal debt

An ex-employee of mine owes me $1800 for a personal loan. I have letters from him stating that he is aware of the money owed but has no way to pay it. At this point I would like to sue him. I would like legal help to do this. I'm just not sure what type of attorney would specialize in this area. Or what steps would be best.

Re: Collecting a personal debt

Most attorneys are not going to handle a debt this small. Your best bet is small claims court. Your documentation will help the court find in your favor, and it is a very simple process where you do not need to have an attorney.

Good luck.

Re: Collecting a personal debt

Many general practitioners handle collection lawsuits, and there are many lawyers who do nothing else. However, when the debt is as relatively small as this one, you would be well advised to file a suit in small claims court on your own. You do not need an attorney and if you wish to hire one you will be spending a good part of the money owed to you without any guarantee that the debt will be collected. Go to small claims court and the clerks will help you.
