Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri

Credit Charges

In the early part of February I received a letter of collection from an appliance/furniture store stating that I was 6 months late on my payments. I haven't bought anything there since last June and it was payed off in September. I called to ask what I was late on since I hadn't purchased anything. The person on the phone said that it was for an identity protection service with their credit card. I stated that I had not requested this or even want it. The gentleman said that he was sorry and gave me another customer service number and told me that they could stop these charges and take it off my credit. When I called the other number they agreed to stop the charges but told me that if I didn't pay then they would put me in collection proceedings. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Thank You

Re: Credit Charges

I would ask them to send you written verification that you purchased the credit protection they are charging you for. If they have sent you bills, you should protect your legal rights by corresponding within thirty days advising them of the dispute. You should also tell them that you will consider it a willful violation of the fair debt collection practices act if they take any action that would adversely effect your credit unless and until the alleged debt is verified. Ask that a copy of your letter be forwarded to any credit bureau that has been advised of the alleged debt.
