credit collector refuses to record call

I am tring to pay off a debt that is with a law firm and they will not speak to me if I inform them that I am recording the phone call. Is this legal? Do I have to pay this debt if they refuse to speak to me?

Explain to me what in the world a law firm declining to have their telephone communications recorded has to do with whether you owe a debt or not.
