Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri

debt collection

I have a credit report showing a zero balance on a repo in 1999. it also says $0 past balance. how ever they called me and told me i still owe 9,119. and if i dont pay they will do a legal judgement. It also says it was charged off as a bad debt. account opened 10/1999 and closed 05/2002/ what can i do?

This is quite likely a "distressed debt" collector who is trying to get to you.

You can demand that they have no further contact with you. You need to send them a certified letter, return receipt requested. The letter says:

Pursuant to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act I hereby direct that you have no further communications with me.

I dispute the debt.

Sign it and send it and make sure you certify it. If they bother you after that by phone or letter, you can sue THEM.
