how can i defend myself from past creditors now that i'm disabled and cannot afford to pay the lumpsum they want?

If you choose nto to fiel bankruptcy, then you will have to defend yourself liek any other civil defendant, i.e. make the plaintiff prove their case. If all of your funds are disability payments, then there is little for them to garnish, unless you own property. Perhaps you can work out a payment arrangement with your creditors. You may be able to hire an attorney to negotiate settlement(s) for you
