Garnishment if Self-employed

Is it possible for a self employed person to have earnings garnished? I have contracted with a company for 11+yrs and receive a 1099 for my wages so I am responsible for my taxes. I am also single head of household if that has any bearings. Thank you in advance.

Re: Garnishment if Self-employed

It is possible if the creditor knows who your employer is. Irrespective of whether you are an employee or an independent contractor who gets a 1099, the issue is whether someone else holds money that belongs to you. If they do, a judgment creditor can garnish it, subject to some limitations. Since you get a 1099, and these are not "wages" per se, the limitation with respect to garnishing wages may not apply and you should probably see an attorney for advice specific about this matter.
