I am being sued in court by a local hospital for non-payment of medical billls. I cannot afford a lawyer. What is going to happen when I go to court?

Re: Lawsuit
Usually one of two situations exist: you owe but cannot pay, or you do not owe.
If you do not owe, you need to hire an attorney and defend the action. If you don't have funds, there are clinics at the law schools in St. Louis, and also, there is Legal Aid of Eastern Missouri that can help you.
If you owe but cannot pay, then a defense would be oriented toward how much you have to pay. Again, it might be advisable to contact an attorney for help.
If you do nothing a default judgment will be entered against you. The default judgment allows them to garnish your wages, seize the money in your bank account, and sell off any personal property (cars, boats, jewelry, etc.). Sometimes bankruptcy is a good option when you do not have any money to pay these kinds of debts. You might consider finding a bankruptcy attorney and asking for help.
