Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri

Magazine subscriptions

My 18 year old daughter consented to receiving 8 Magazines for up to 4 years. She was being charged 66.00 a month for 15 months she lost her job and could not aford to pay. Is there any way she can get out of this. She tried to cancel before the magazines started to come but they refused to cancel. Now they are sending threatening letters. Does she have any optins. The company is out of state and gave no other options.

Re: Magazine subscriptions

This marketing approach likely violates Chapter 407, Missouri's Merchandising Practices Act in that it is unfair and unconscionable. If she wants to cancel the magazines, she should cancel them directly with the publisher. She should cease payment. She is not liable for payment for any magazine received after the notice of the cancellation.

If she gets threatening correspondence, save it and file a report with the Missouri Attorney General's office and the Federal Trade Commission.

Good luck.
