Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri

medical collections

I have good credit. But no savings I can get to. I have 2,000 in med. bills from 6 weeks ago. The hospital is harassing me because I can only pay $50 a month. Can they require more of a payment, turn me over to a collections agency or ruin my credit as long as I am making consistent monthly payments?

Re: medical collections

The hospital is not required to extend payment arrangements and can both turn you over to collections and sue you for the balance if they so desire. Most hospitals are willing to accept payments over time, and normally they want the right to determine how much they think you can pay. Send them $50 a month and do so religiously, and you shouldn't have a problem with them. If they return your checks, or seek to impose penalties or interest, then see an attorney.
