I am sorry for your loss. You are not personally responsble for your mother's medical bills unless you signed a personal guarantee to pay them. The creditors can file claims in any probate estate proceedings that may be opened. You should send any creditor who is bothering you a letter advising them that your mother is deceased, and that you are not responsible for the bill. Also, request that a copy of your letter be forwarded to any credit bureau to which the account has been reported. Finally, insist that they stop all further contact with you, and that any further contact will be considered a violation of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. Keep a copy of any letter that you send. If they continue to bother you after this, contact an attorney.
