Paying old debt.

3 Years ago My now x husband totaled a car I was buying. Then owed $2,000 left. Its been 3 1/2 years a colleciton agency called me demanding over $3,000 I told them I could only pay $50 a month. What is the smallest amt I can pay on something like this. Can they make me pay more?

Re: Paying old debt.

A collection agency can demand anything they want, including full payment. But they will likely accept payments. They will want the biggest payment they can get, and they don't care if that runs you short at the end of the month. They're kind of uncaring about that sort of thing.

They have the right and ability to take you to court to get a judgment. If they do that, they can garnish your wages and get paid back a little quicker. Obviously you don't want to let that happen to you.

Try to work out a payment arrangement, and good luck.
