Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri

I and a roommate went and picked up a free non running riding mower. He said he could fix it and tried but failed to repair the mower. After it sat on my property for 3 months, I took it and had it repaired. Total bill $350.00. Now I have been using the mower for 2 months and I have served him eviction papers. He wants to take the mower and not pay for the repairs. Is he legally able to do this?
