Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri
I run a small business and have several companies and individuals who are late in their payments. I have heard about a collection company that will send letters asking them to pay. How effective is this kind of service?

It depends on the company. If they are not a law firm, in Missouri, they can only demand payment. They cannot actually take someone to court, get a judgment, or enforce it through payment. In Missouri, almost anyone can call themselves a collection agency.
A Missouri licensed attorney must complete law school and pass a rigorous exam called the State Bar. We must also take yearly continuing education classes.
I would suggest hiring a Missouri licensed attorney for collections, as, for about the same price as you can get an amateur, you can get a full service professional. In addition, a Missouri licensed attorney knows the law better than unlicensed collection agents. Feel free to contact me if I can be of further assistance.

I agree that it would be better for you to consult with an attorney who does collections work, rather than spend money on a collection agency. If you are on the Eastern half of the state, I might be able to help you myself. I have handled collections for over thirty-one years.
