I am single and I have a big student loan. If I get married is my spouse going to be responsible for my debt?

Re: Is Spouse Responsible For Student Loans

She will not have any responsibility for paying your student loans unless she takes some action to assume that responsibility, like, for example, signing as a joint borrower with you if you were to refinance the loans. Other than signing an additional or subsequent loan agreement, loans are personal matters that remain the responsibility of the borrower.

That is not to say, however, that she would not be affected by a default. If you defaulted and the government moved to levy on your wages, for example, her lifestyle would certainly be impacted. But she does not assume any personal liability merely by marrying you.
