Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri
Time Life Book Scams
I recently received a book in the mail from Time Life books with a bill in the amount of $34.95. The book was published by Sports Illustrated magazine (which I do not subscribe to) and was related to sports (not an area of intrest) I in no was EVER asked to have this book sent to me and am now receiving a bill. I did open the box, but do not want to pay to send the book back since I did not order it to begin with. I have never made an order with this company. Can they just send me something and bill me without my permission? How can I make this go away with NO money out of pocket?

Re: Time Life Book Scams
They have a website (with customer service right on it)
and they have toll-free numbers. Call them up quick
to make sure you don't get another sent at the end of
the next month.
I'm surprised they didn't include a return address
shipping label that covers the cost of the return shipping.
When you talk to them, ask for that.
They usually have either a recorded, or at least cross-checked
(by a 'supervisor') telephone call where you agreed to buy a series
of books or a signed order. Be sure to ask them for the back-up
evidence that there was an order, since you might be able to figure
out who ordered the book (series!) in your name.

And no, you don't have to pay for the book. You probably don't even have to return it. A company that sends out unsolicited merchandise is taking the chance of losing it.
TimeLife is, however, a reputable outfit. Start with the assumption that it was a mistake. Or some child in your family ordered it? (If so, you're still not responsible - a child under 18 can't commit you for a non-essential purchase.)
Good luck
