Unless yrou grandaughter is also your Ward (ginven to yrou for custody and care by the state) then the studen tloan may not be collectable as against you. If your granddaughter is over the age of eighteen, she may have acause of action agaisnt showever talked to you abou the debt, if it was somone collecting on behalf of the creditor. If this young lady is the granddaughter of your wife, but not related to you, the debt is not directly collectable against you, unless you have agreed to pay for her.
Your wife is just as liable as her granddaughter as to the debt. If the young lady fails to pay, the credtior can sue your wife without having to sue her grandaughter. If they obtain judgment, they might be able to get her share of assets that she has, even some that she shares with you. In that way the debt may be indrectly collectable against you.
