Legal Question in Criminal Law in Missouri

I have been charged with possession of a dangerous drug and was told by the arresting officer that it was a misdemeanor. Also I was told they do not have public defenders. It is in Arnold, mo. What course of action do I take since I can not afford representation?

Do not take any legal advice from the police. If your Court date is in the Arnold Municipal Court, then you are charged with a violation of the Arnold Municipal Code. You should hire an attorney. But, if you can't afford one, you can talk to the Judge when your case is called and ask if you can avoid a conviction. He might refer you to the prosecutor, and you might be able to work out a plea bargain. A conviction would be devastating for your future. If you are charged with a misdemeanor, then your court date will be in the Circuit Court in Hillsboro. Again, you may be able to talk with the Judge and the prosecutor, and you may also apply for the public defender. I hope this has been helpful for you. I do handle criminal cases, and if you become able to hire an attorney, I'd be happy to help you. Good luck.
