Legal Question in Criminal Law in Missouri

My daughter's roommate took a bat to her $900 smart tv and destroyed it. When my daughter called the police, they said there was nothing they could do since it was in a communal area of the apartment. Is this true? There should be consequences to her actions.

The police lied. They usually do. The roommate could definitely have been arrested and charged with the offense of destruction of property. Your daughter could file a complaint with the municipal police where she lives, and the county police where she lives to seek criminal prosecution. Your daughter could also, and should file suit against the roommate in small claims court for the monetary amount of her damages. She should also evict the roommate if possible, or obtain an Adult Abuse Order of Protection which could keep the roommate out of the premises and away from your daughter. I have a daughter, and will do anything I can do to protect her, no matter how old she gets. Either you or your daughter can call me at 314-727-2822 for a free telephone consultation. I've had 38 years experience.
