In Missouri, if you are denied a public defender, and you do not retain an attorney, you are deemed to have waived your right to counsel. If you wish to retain an attorney, it is up to the judge to grant you additional time. Most judges are sympathetic and do not want a defendant to go unrepresented. However, dockets are crowded. A judge might give you a month or two to get an attorney, but they don't want a case to linger 4-6 months or more while you look for an attorney. Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss the options.
