Legal Question in Criminal Law in Missouri
Pro Bono Legal Services in Missouri
My friend has been indicted by a grand jury on 3 felony counts. His mother, a friend, and I came up with the money to post bond through a bondsman. The problem now is he needs an attorney. According to Missouri law, he does not qualify for a public defender due to the amount of his bail. Could you suggest an attorney in our area who offers pro bono or low-cost representation?

Re: Pro Bono Legal Services in Missouri
Many attorneys in Missouri will agree to simply take a bond assignement. In otherwords, when the case is over, the bond money is given to the attorney from which he takes his fee. Anything left over is returned to the client. As far a pro bono work, you can call the your local metropolitan bar association and aske for some names. Many attorneys do pro bono work but they are selective in what they take.

Your question does not include information about "where" these felony charges are pending. If they are in a court in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area or surrounding counties, then I would be willing to talk with you about the charges and about working something reasonable out for attorney's fees. As another attorney replied, criminal defense lawyers often agree to take a Bond Assignment to secure payment of at least part of the fees. Also, arrangements can be made for installments. Sometimes, a client may sign a prommisory note just like any other loan, and sometimes attorney's will hold a car title or some other form of collateral to secure payment of the attorney's fees. Please call me for a free telephone consultation at 314-727-2822 if I might be of service. Thank you.
