Legal Question in Criminal Law in Missouri
I was recently involved in a shoplifting incident at Walmart a couple months ago (a couple tubes of lipstick, not over $20) . No cops were called and no charges were brought up. About a month ago I received a letter asking for a $525 fine, I had read that most people ignore it and are fine. About a week ago I received the same letter asking for the same fine or Walmart may sue. My question is would you advise me to pay this and what are the chances of Walmart actually suing?

Dear Questioner,
The chances of you being sued and for that specific amount I would say are slim. First, they would have almost no damages because they recovered the items from you. Second, the legal costs from them would outweigh the $525 they are trying to collect.
In doing a simple Google search I found that this question has been asked multiple times and it appears Walmart is in the practice of doing this. Your use of the word "fine" is troubling in the question. A fine may only come from a court or legal authority. Unless Walmart got a judgment against you already, then you may ignore their letter.
