Legal Question in Criminal Law in Missouri
I was served papers by a hospital suing for unpaid medical bills totalling over $2,000. I never went to court ,but I did pay the amount I was being sued for. Is this considered a plea of "no contest' or "nolo contendre" to a felony?
1 Answer from Attorneys
If you were served with a Summons and did not appear at court, the plaintiff likely took a judgment by default against you. If you paid the money after court, then you can demand that the plaintiff or their attorney file a "Satisfaction" in the case. If you paid before court, then they may still come after you for the money.
All of this is in civil court. The nolo contendere, no contest, etc. have to do with criminal cases. In America we do nto jail people or charge them with afelony just for owing a bill to a creditor..
Good luck
