Generally speaking, if law enforcement officials have probable cause to believe that a crime is being committed or that evidence of a crime exists and they satisfy a judge of the basis for that belief then most judges will issue a search warrant. "Probable cause" must be supported by a sufficient amount of objective factual evidence, but may be supported by hearsay or by information from a confidential informant. In some cases it is possible to sucessfully attack a warrant after the fact on the grounds that it was not based upon sufficient evidence of probable cause.
