what happens to my 401k when i get a divorce? when does seperation start?

If you do not have an attorney, you should at least consult with one, and hire one if you are going through a dissolution of marriage. Generally speaking, the date of seperation is not relevant to your question. Funds contributed to your retirement fund after your marriage are considered marital property until the date of dissolution with some exeptions.
