Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

I have a 23 year old son who is ill and unable to work. He is currently under the care of several specialist within the Saint Lukes Health System. We received a call that they would like for him to receive treatment at the Mayo clinic. Currently my husband, his stepfather, and I are paying all my sons medical bills and paying for his health insurance. His father refuses to help out with his sons medical expenses. Currently this year the medical expenses are totaling $8500, that is without the travel expenses to the mayo Clinic. Will I be able to file a small claim court case to have his father pay for half?
