My ex abandoned my son, what now?

My ex-husband has legal custody of my son, who is 10. My ex left my son with me July 2005 and then attempted suicide. He was hospitalized until September, I think, but did not reclaim custody after being released. He left the state in February 2006 after threatening me and my fiance. I have no forwarding address; how do I get legal custody of my son?
