Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

adoption\child custody

my partner has a son who is now 10 years old, we have been together for a while and the child has asked that I adopt him so that in the event something happen to his mother he can stay with me. How do we go about making this happen. The father has little to no contact(havent spoken in 5 mo) and only pays CS through the court.
