Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri
I don't think this is the right category but maybe it's the closest one.
I moved to Missouri with my girlfriend at the time about 2 years ago. We get engaged. I bought a house (it's under my name) for us to live in. We start remodeling the house, wood floors, etc.. and we both pay for a lot of it. Months later, we break up, she leaves me. Now, she's claiming I owe her all this money that she has to pay every month on her credit cards for things she did to the house and tells me that the point of doing all of that was to increase the value of the house so we can one day sell it and make money, and that now I was the only one that is going to make money out of it, and plus I VERBALLY agreed to help pay off her debt.
I tell her I don't owe her any money. It was your idea to make all the remodelings, I didn't force you to either do them OR force you to put them on your credit card... and YES, I did say I would help you pay off your debt... Of course I would! She was my fiance, why wouldn't I? As long as we were together ofcourse I would help her pay off her credit card... just like I helped her pay off all other bills. But she left me! Now she said she'll take me to court for that money.
Do I owe her anything? Would I win or loose this case? Thank you, Julian.

It may be that you got aloan from your ex, depending upon how the facts play out. In that case you might be deemed to owe her some money. She may be able to claim you have been unjustly enriched. That means that you got something extra to her detriment. For example, she buys something for your house, and you promise to pay or help pay for it. If she relied upon that promise to make the purchase and/or to forego using her money elsewhere, and the purchase made your house more valuable, you may be deemed to have gotten the benefit of the enhanced value to her detriment, if she is stuck paying off the cost of the improvement herself.
These are but just a few of the several theories that she might try to get acourt to say you have to pay her some money. More likely is that she will be deemed to have gifted the items she bought, particulary if she was not paying rent. it woudl require knowing more facts to determien the likelihood of you owing money.
