Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

debts before marraige

I am engaged to my fiance and he has past credit and debt problems (a home foreclosure and state taxes that he owes from a business that went bankrupt in which he was 'doing business as'). Anyway, I was wondering if we married, would I be responsible for his past debts? In other words, since I have fairly good credit, will past creditors come after me for payment once we marry?

Re: debts before marraige

The simple answer is no, his creditors can not collect his previous debts from you. But, given his history, you are liable to become responsible for debts incurred after the marriage, and your own good credit rating may be adversely affected.
