Re: My Divorce
Yes, Missouri law allows an individual to represent oneself in court, and it may be possible for you to actually accomplish getting divorced without hiring an attorney. However, I firmly believe that it would be a mistake for you to do so. A divorce concerns the legal rights and duties of at least two people and more if there are children involved. The law governing these matters can be quite complex and even experienced attorneys who do nothing but divorce work have their hands full. I am always very concerned that an individual doing their own divorce will cause many more legal problems than he or she solves, and in most cases that individual will wind up paying much much more in attorneys fees to straighten out those problems if possible at all at some later date. Please carefully consider all of your options and do what you can to consult with an attorney. It may be possible to work out an installment plan to pay the fees. It may be possible to obtain a Court Order requiring the other party to pay your attorney's fees, or reimburse you for fees you have already paid. In any event, I wish you the very best luck.
