Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

Emancipation of minor child

Our 17-year-old son wants to move out because he doesn't like our rules. We will allow him to do so as long as we are not legally responsible for him or his actions. What is the basis and process of emancipation of a minor child? Is it expensive?

Re: Emancipation of minor child

To the best of my knowledge, you may in fact be subject to some liability for the acts of your minor son. However, if your son moves out of your home, establishes his own residence and lives completely outside of your control, he should be considered "emancipated" in the eyes of the law. You do not need to go to court in order to get any Judgment, although there is a procedure for having a child declared emancipated which is used mostly by Dad's who want to be sure their child support obligations are terminated at the appropriate time (when the child is "emancipated.)
