Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri
Just found out TODAY my husband of 9 years not only had an affair, but got the other woman pregnant. She's already had the baby and suing for child support. I was the lucky one to open the mail today. We have no children, my husband is college educated, but currently unemployed (almost 2 years). I earn all of our income (150k plus) and support the household. Not sure if I'm staying or leaving at this point, still fuming! We own some rental property and have a decent IRA nestegg. Also, I own my own business (dermatologist). Here's the questions: If I stay, is my income on the line for child support? If I leave, will he likely get half of everything I've worked hard for? What are my options?? Please help!

I am sorry to hear about your situation. First, you do not have to worry that any of your income will be counted in the calculation of child support for your husband's lovechild. Second, the law governing the division of marital property is too complex to give you much of an education on that topic on this website. I believe that you would benefit from consulting with an attorney who is experienced in this filed of law and who practices in the geographical area where you live. If you happen to be in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, or any of the surrounding counties, I may be able to be of service, and I would be happy to offer you a consultation. Whether you decide to try to work through this, or you decide to end the marriage, you should know as much as possible about your legal rights and duties. I have been practicing law for thirty-three years and I have handled hundreds of domestic matters. Please feel free to contact me for a consultation. If you are located elsewhere in the state, I may be able to refer you to an honest and competent attorney.
