Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

i left my husband and moved to ohio, not here long enough to be considered a resident, he's filed divorce papers already and i have recieved a court summons but have no way to get back to missouri to appear in court to plead my case. by both ohio and missouri law, am i allowed to hire a missouri lawyer to appear in court on my behalf and if so, are there any specific things that said lawyer cannot appear for me in court for that i will need to get down there for, for example this specific first court appearance?

Yes, you can and certainly should hire a Missouri lawyer to represent you. The lawyer can file an Entry of Appearance and responsive pleadings on your behalf. You may be able to get through the entire Dissolution of Marriage without having to make a personal appearance in the Missouri court if everything is settled between you and your spouse, but it is also possible that the Judge will require your appearance at settlement conferences or other court dates. It is also possible that you may be required to travel back to Missouri for your deposition if the case goes that far. If the case goes to trial, then you will definitely need to be there in person.
