What is the legal age to move?
My ex has physical custody of my son and is not doing well, my son wants to live with me. He is 16 years old, will be 17 in May. Will we need to go to court again or can he move out at the age of 17?

Unlees your ex gives permission. you will probably have to seek a custody modification through the Court. The minor's preference of whom to live with, can be persuasive with the Court, in the absence of facts preventing you from having primary custody.
