can a mother who has legal custody be sought after for child support if the father is helping keep the child for a little bit.

The custody and Support Orders remain in effect until changed. The support obligor parent does not escape the obligation to pay by housing the child more, or directly paying for some things. That parent may be able to use those circumstances to seek a modification of the support and/or custody Orders.
