Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

My niece wanted to divorce her husband so my husband and I sent a check for $5000.00 to the Attorney in Dec 2009. She and her husband went to his attorney in April 2010 and got a no contested divorce. Now the Attorney we sent the money to on her behalf will not refund the $5000. What is our recourse. We are in Missouri. We have sent him 2 letters and called him several times but he will not return our calls. Thank you.

If you contact the Missouri Bar in Jefferson City, they have a special fee dispute resolution program. It sounds like you may be owed some or all of the money you sent in December 2009. Through teh Bar's prgram you can possibly get a mediator or something akin to an arbitration process to resolve the issue opf the advance on fees(and/or costs) that you sent.
