i am pregnant and wish to place it for adoption. can the father stop me from doing so?

If the father knows about the birth, he may be able to petition for visitation or custody.

Yes. If he is aware of the pregnancy and takes steps now or soon after the birth to protect his rights, the adoptive parents would likely have no grounds to terminate his parental rights, thus preventing you from being able to fulfill your adoption plan.
