raising grandson

i have had my grandson since june17 1999 and the mother has left him since she is now in prison could i get full custody? My son has gave me guardianship of the child on his part, she was in prison for drugs etc. woild it be hard for me to get custody? i am so afraid she may try to take him,The state has already taken one child because of things she done.
