How would I go about obtaining custody or guardianship of my 16 year old sister in order to enroll her in school?

You need to file a formal petition with the probate court seeking appointment of a guardian. I can help, I have over 32 years of legal experience. Feel free to contact me at [email protected]

Re: Sister Obtaining Custody/Guardianship

There might be a variety of ways to get your sister enrolled in school depending upon your circumstances. If a parent with legal custody of your sister will cooperate, a special power of attorney can be drafted and signed by that parent which will give you the authority to care for your sister for up to one year. Most school districts will accept this document when you go to enroll your sister. However, if the parent is unwilling or unable to cooperate in this way, then you might need to file a Petition in the Probate Court asking to be legally appointed your sister's guardian. I would strongly suggest that you consult with an attorney as soon as possible.
