Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Missouri

Car Ownership

I am 18 and moved out of my house. My mother refuses to sign over the title of the car to me so I cant take it, I have no vehicle. I was the sole driver of the car, I een had it customzed with my name on the bumper. My mother doesnt even drive. My social security from my dads death paid for the payments and insurance and all she will do is sell it. Can I get legal action to have the right of ownership to the car?

Re: Car Ownership

There is no legal requirement that your mother sign over the title to you, even if she doesn't drive, and even if your father's social security check made the payments. If the car is titled in your mother's name, then it is her car. It may be a pain, but that's the way the world works.

If you want a car you need to go get a job and start saving your money so that you can buy one. Or, perhaps you could arrange with your mother to purchase your car from her.

Another thought. Although at 18 you are legally an adult, nothing requires your mother to treat you that way. Mothers like to have things done their way. Usually there's a good reason for it. If I were you, I might consider apologizing and moving back in. It will be much less expensive in the long run.

Good luck,
