Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Missouri

Am i liable to pay back plane ticket to ex-girlfriend?

Ex-Girlfriend's father is threatening to sue if I don't pay him for a $400 plane ticket she bought for both of us with his credit card. She offered to pay $200(half) as a present, because I could not afford all of it when we were going out. I broke up with her over a month before the flight. I was told the ticket was non-refundable AFTER we broke up. Her father wants $400 and is threatening to sue. What actions do I take. I'm a college student. What are my options?

First, this is likely a small claims matter and one you can defend yourself. The father may not have "standing" to sue since he did not purchase the ticket. The girl purchased the ticket and told you it was a gift. If you never agreed to pay for the ticket at any time, then the court is likely to view it as a gift and not hold you accountable.

If the father sues, go to court and tell your side of the story. You can also say that although the ticket was non-refundable, that does not mean that the girl can't get some use of the credit. She can apply that credit to another flight within one year. Find out what airline it is and get their policies for non-refundable tickets and take that with you to court. You can argue that they have not actually been damaged.

In the end you should prevail. In the future, don't get put in this position. This "gift" is turning out not to be such a great thing. If the situation presents itself again, you'll know better than to say yes.
