Making a false statement when noterized

Is this like making a false statement under oath, which would be illegal?

Yes. Knowingly making a false statement under oath is not a good idea. It may be used against you in court to show that you are dishonest, and that testimony you give later is less likely to be true because of this lie. It may be used as evidence against you in a criminal trial. But, it is not often the basis for a criminal accusation in and of itself. You could be accused of fraud regarding the matter to which you are giving the statement, but not likely for just plan lying, that had no other effect.
