Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Missouri

stop check payment

I stopped payment on a check for a plumber that used incorrect parts and left the job with my shower still leaking. They would not show back up to fix it and said even if they decided to I would have to pay about $250 to fix it. Then they drove by and egged my house. Now they talked to a prosecuter in jackson county missouri to I guess sue me. What is the worst that could happen to me and what are my steps and can they win? I had a new plumber come in after he left and he fixed it and said the guy used the wrong parts. What is Missouri law in regards to this?

Re: stop check payment

It is possible that the first plumber could sue you in civil court for non payment. You would, of course, raise the inferior work as a defense. You did not provide enough facts to determine the likely outcome of that case.

There may also be a slight chance that the prosecutor could try to bring a criminal charge against you. But,based upon what you have said, the prosecutor probably told the first plumber that this is a civil matter and opted to not bring you into criminal court.
