US Citizen marrying an Illegal Immigrant

Is it true that an illegal immigrant can become a citizen by marrying a US citizen? My boyfriend and I have been dating for two years and have talked about getting married. He and his family came to the US illegally but have done everything they can to become citizens. They have waited for papers for 12 years now and still nothing. When we get married, how long will it take for him to become a citizen?

It's possible but depends on what exactly was filed for your boyfriend's parents and when it was filed.
