Re: Personal Health Ins vs. 3rd Party Liability Ins.
The short answer is YES! You buy health insurance to cover a risk, and they have to pay if that risk- your need for medical coverage- comes to pass. The 3rd party is liable to you for the cost of medical bills as well as for your personal disfigurement and disability. If you have paid for additional coverage, you are entitled to collect from both your personal insurer and the 3rd party. It is not cheating, anymore than it would be to collect for multiple life insurance policies when someone dies. They took premiums, and must pay if the risk comes to pass.
Some plans are entitled to a portion of the payments back if you collect from the 3rd party, but you should have an experienced attorney look into this for you before you pay anything.
