Legal Question in Employment Law in Missouri

driving personal car while on company time

I am a ups driver. I was injured on the job. following day I called in to tell my supervisor i needed to see the doctor. was told to come in and fill out papers. Then was sent to wc doctor. On the way to the doctor i broke down in my car. I had it towed home and proceeded in another car to doctor and then went back to work. They fired me for job abandonment because i had my car towed home and took too long to get to doctors. Can they do that?

Re: driving personal car while on company time

Unless you have a contract, you are an at will employee in Missouri, and can be fired for any reason, or NO reason at all. However, if you are fired for asserting your workers' compensation rights, you have an independent lawsuit against your employer. One question to answer is the reasonableness in your delay- was it hours or days?

The bottom line is that you should speak directly to an attorney about this matter. Without more detail, I don't know how to definitively answer your question.
