Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Missouri
My 64-year-old relative's landlord refuses to replace her 10+ year old furnace that will not consistently heat. The landlord has ordered the contracting heating and cooling company to cease servicing the furnace, and will not respond to my relative's calls. My relative has illnesses, including arthritis, that are exacerbated by cold. She has lived in the same apartment for 11 years, and has taken excellent care of the property. Does she have any recourse other than moving out until she can find other housing? The landlord still expects her to pay rent as usual.
1 Answer from Attorneys
If the landlord is responsible for heart, than your relative may be able to get the furnace fixed herself, and then reduce her tent payment by the amount she has to pay for the repairs.
Good luck
