Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Missouri

My apartment lease states, ". . . either party may terminate this agreement without cause by delivering a written notice of termintion to the other party at least one full calender month prior to the lease expiration of termination date."

My lease expires August 22nd, 2012 -- I had / have the understanding that, "one full calender month" means we needed to give notice by July 21st or July 22nd. We are now being told "one full calender month means you had to give notice at the beginning of the month in which the 30 days to expiration begins." Rather, our lease is up August 22nd, so we had to give notice on July 1st?

Am I correct in my position, that 'full calender month' is reasonably assumed, by any layperson, to mean 30-31 days before the lease expiration?
