Renter's insurance is property insurance for your personal property. A landlord may nto require you buy it, unless your lease says you are required to. But, if yrou lease requires you to purchase liability insurance to cover the landlord's losses if ther eis afire, or you cause damge beyong normal wera and tear (without requing y9ou pay security deposit) you will have to buy such insurance. If the lease does nto require it, then they bought the lease as is. Ther request that you buy any insurance is request to alter the contract. You shoudl ask for someting in exchange for agreeing to the charnge, (perhaps lower rent, or more services from the landlord) If the Lease does nto require you to buy the rnet, they cannto evict you based upon your refusal to buy any. But, if you refuse, they may be less likely to overlook any other time you breach the lease, and evict you based upon that breach.

Having said that, it is almost always better to buy renter's insurance. It is cheap. unless your lease says otherwise, your landlord is not responsible for any of the losses you suffer if there is a fire or flood, or break in, except in very rare ocasions. If the total value of your stuff is not more than $500, perhaps you may not want to buy the insurance. But, If your clothes, electronic equipment, furntiure, pictures, art work, and other items are in total worth anywhere near $1,000, you should buy some insurance.
